- For the best nail care, trim fingernails before you shower — dry nails are less likely to bend or tear as you clip them, so you'll get a smoother cut. Clipping straight across fingernails can bend and damage them, so cut at an angle that follows the nail's natural curve, making 3 to 4 small cuts as you move from the outer edges inward. For thick toenails, however, soak them in warm water for 10 minutes to soften them, then thoroughly dry your nails before you begin trimming. To use as toenail clippers for thick nails, make small cuts to avoid splintering the nail, and cut straight across; don't round off the corners, which can lead to ingrown toenails. When working on thick, hard nails, squeeze the nail nipper's handles in one quick, firm motion (closing them gradually makes it harder to cut tough nails)
