- Ingrown toenails are a common condition in which the corner or side of the toenail grows into the soft flesh of the toe. First, briefly soak toes in warm water to soften toenails. While toenails are still soft, cut toenails with a straight edge toenail clipper. Toenails should always be cut straight across to help prevent ingrown toenails. Carefully place curved end of the ingrown toenail file under corner of nail and gently lift up. Move ingrown toenail file out and up; the reverse action will clean under the nail. Lifting the toenail helps to relieve pressure to the skin surrounding the nail and helps it to eventually grown above the skin edge. The file should be carefully cleaned between each use.
