Book is in French While Madeleine atones for her sins in the factories of the Amoskeag Textile Company in the United States, peace settles in the Leclerc home. This tranquility is however disturbed by the birth of Agnes, an inexorable reminder of the existence of another child, born of sin. The situation deteriorates when Ti-Jean's debtors attack the family home, leaving a distraught Constance and a priest determined to elucidate this sad affair... and ready to act as a savior of souls for the occasion. In the meantime, Madeleine seeks to return home and Constance begs Edgar to take her with him to the construction sites, despite her early pregnancy. But each project carries its share of risks...
