Book is in French 1920. At the age of eleven, Lauréanne believes that there is no more charming place on earth than Saint-Fulgence, her native village. It must be said that this corner of Saguenay has something to delight the nature lover in her. But consumed by her many responsibilities on the family farm, the little girl has little time to contemplate the landscape. She also sees her Garden of Eden losing its luster when a succession of misfortunes befall her home. Her mother falls ill. A fire destroys her house. She and her brother have to go into exile at the boarding school in Quebec. And the clan is not yet at the end of its troubles... Powerless in the face of adversity, Lauréanne can at least hope to continue her studies, which promise her a better future. When she comes of age, deciding to forge her own path, she leaves for Chicoutimi, where she will discover the exhilaration of new independence and the sweetness of a budding love. Outside of Saint-Fulgence, will the pretty fighter with a heavy past succeed in creating a paradise of her own? Will she be able to capture these inviting glimmers of freedom looming on the horizon?
