Book is in French Charlevoix extends along the northern edge of the St. Lawrence River, from Baie-Sainte-Catherine, on the west shore of the Saguenay, to Petite-Rivière-Saint-François. In addition to the coastal villages, there is Île aux Coudres and a few places inland. The region, whose settlement began around 1675 with the arrival of the Tremblays, Bouchards and Simards among others, today has 30,000 inhabitants. Charlevoix has a well-defined personality. It is distinguished by its varied landscapes which find their origin in the rugged relief of the Laurentians, but also in the imprints left by the fall of a giant meteorite, which occurred 350 million years ago. The landscapes are also an asset in terms of tourism. Indeed, for 200 years, they have aroused the admiration of vacationers and tourists, from Quebec, Canada and the United States. Charlevoix today continues to develop its tourist vocation. Its natural attractions are highlighted through ecotourism. The inhabitants also assert their cultural identity: artistic production, popular festivals, promotion of heritage and culinary specialties evoke the past and present living environment.
