Toshio Odate apprenticed as a tategu-shi (sliding-door maker) for seven years in Japan before coming to America in 1948. He taught sculpture for many years at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and has given dozens of seminars all over North America on the use of Japanese tools. He brings a level of knowledge and fidelity to traditional methods that is seldom found.
Starting with workshop set-up, he then describes a wide range of tools such as planes, saws, chisels and marking tools, and includes a section on sharpening with water stones. His book details not only the use of tools, but also the place of the maker and the user of tools in Japanese society.
An excellent book for anyone who wants to better understand Japanese tools and the meaning of true craftsmanship. Extensively illustrated with black-and-white photos and drawings.
Softcover, 9" × 12", 189 pages, 1998.
